The Office of Multicultural Ministries is offering an “opportunity for people to enter a planned process that can enable us to break down prejudice by simply forming bonds of care and friendship with our brothers and sisters of different cultural and religious backgrounds.” St. Margaret Mary has been invited to join this wonderful opportunity with a limited space of 6 parishioners. SMM will join with two other parishes (one from the west end and one from the south end of Louisville) meeting once a week for 5 weeks. After these 5 weeks all 3 parishes will work together on a 5-month action plan to help make positive changes in our community. Online Resources for Daily Prayer/Guided Retreat – SacredSpace.ie
This Covid crisis has underlined how much we truly need spiritual, as well as social communication. It might seem strange to pray at your computer, in front of a screen or using your smartphone, but God is everywhere, constantly reaching out to us, even in the most unlikely situations. When we know this, and with a bit of practice, we can pray anywhere! This week we wanted to highlight an online resource that can help us tend to our spiritual communication during this time of Covid. The website www.sacredspace.ie/ is a ministry of the Irish Jesuits, originating in the offices of the Jesuit Communication Centre in Ireland in 1999. The site guides visitors through a guided session of daily prayer utilizing a selection from the lectionary, as well as offers seasonal online guided retreats. During this time Sacredspace.ie is offering a 14 Day self-directed retreat called the “Isolation Retreat”. This retreat centers around themes loosely based on the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius*. Each day has a specific theme, a preparatory prayer, related scripture quotes, some questions for reflection & concludes with a closing prayer. We hope that you will check out this wonderful resource.
The prophetic papal encyclical Evangelium vitae (The Gospel of Life) was written by Pope St. John Paul II in 1995 to reaffirm the value and inviolability of every human life and to appeal to all people to respect, protect, love, and serve every human life. The following is a brief overview of this important document. The Gospel of Life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world. Through the Incarnation and birth of Christ, God reveals to us the dignity of all human life. Human life, as a gift of God, is sacred and inviolable. The Son of God has united himself with every human being and desires for us to share eternal life with him. For this reason, direct attacks on human life, such as abortion and euthanasia, are always unacceptable. Yet, sadly we see new and expanding threats to human life emerging on an alarming scale. These new threats to life are often justified, protected, and even promoted by our laws and culture. The Gospel of life is at the heart of Jesus’ saving message to the world. To read on, click here.
Priorities at the Polls
By Most Reverend Joseph F. Naumann
As Catholics approach the polls, we are asked to weigh many important issues. The U.S. bishops have reaffirmed that “the threat of abortion remains our preeminent priority because it directly attacks life itself, because it takes place within the sanctuary of the family, and because of the number of lives destroyed.” While they did warn us not to “dismiss or ignore other serious threats to human life and dignity such as racism, the environmental crisis, poverty, and the death penalty,” they did give priority to upholding and defending our brothers’ and sisters’ most basic right—to live.
Abortion tragically ends someone’s life when he or she is most vulnerable and most in need of loving protection. Abortion is an intrinsic evil, meaning that it is never permitted or morally justified, regardless of individual circumstances or intentions. The personal and societal consequences of attacks against human life, whether at its earliest stages or at its final stages, are all the more serious because most often they are “carried out in the very heart of and with the complicity of the family—the family which by its nature is called to be the ‘sanctuary of life.’” This is the place where a person should be most loved, cherished, and protected.
