MONTHLY PRAYER

O Lord, I pray that the music I make or the songs that I sing are always from my heart to You. I pray that as we sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, we genuinely dedicate each melody to You. I pray that I always give You thanks for all things, in Jesus’ Name. I thank You for this talent You have given me, I choose to give it back to You by using it to glorify Your Name, Amen.

LENT MUSIC NOTES

No drums/brass during Lent. Overall, reduced instrumentation.

“In Lent the playing of the organ and musical instruments is allowed only in order to support the singing. Exceptions, however, are Laetare Sunday (4th Sunday of Lent), Solemnities, and Feasts.” (GIRM#313) At SMM we will have no instrumental prelude or postlude music, except by the handbells on the 4th Sunday of Lent. If using the organ for Mass music, please reduce the sound throughout the Lenten season.

NEW LIVING LITURGY BOOKS

The new Living Liturgy 2023 for Music Minister prayer books are in and can be picked up in the music room behind the organ.

LAROSA PSALMS

We will typically use the metered version of the LaRosa psalms, unless otherwise noted on the music plans. Also, some of her psalms have a sung “coda/ending”, which can be omitted…our practice will be to end the refrain as it is sung throughout the Responsorial Psalm, no extra phrases added. Many LaRosa psalms for Lent have been updated since last year, please download the most recent version from the shared folder.

HYMNAL RESOURCES

In the back room behind the organ I have the following resources available:
Keyboard Cabinet: Journeysongs; Gather 4; Gather 3; Green Gather; Choose Christ; Lead Me, Guide Me
Guitar/Instrumentalist Cabinet: Journeysongs Guitar; Journeysongs Instrumental; Gather 4 C Instrument; Choose Christ Guitar

I try my best to maintain a printed copy of any sheet music not in those resources in the binder in the piano bench.
There is always a copy of every song for the liturgy prepare in the cantor binder. I’m always willing to provide printed copies of music in advance, but I need at least 48 hours notice in the rare case I am not around when you ask.

LENTEN TAIZE PRAYER

Save the date for our Lenten Taize Prayer. All are welcome to participate in this beautiful liturgy (singers & instrumentalists). I am excited to have musicians from St. Gabriel join us for this liturgy as well.

Taize Rehearsals
February 7th & 14th (combined with choir)

February 21st – TAIZE only

If you made it this far in the newsletter, send Holly a cute picture of a penguin to make her smile. She’ll stop whatever she is doing and offer a up a “Glory Be” in thanksgiving for all the wondrous things God has done.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS – STABAT MATER

Please sign up for a Friday, or more, if you’re able to attend and help lead those in attendance of the singing of Stabat Mater, a capella, following Stations of the Cross during Fridays in Lent.

CHANTING THE DIVINE OFFICE

I am excited to offering opportunities to pray Compline (Night Prayer) and Vespers (Evening Prayer) throughout the season of Lent, using Gregorian chant.
Compline – Every night during Lent @ 9pm (SMM Facebook & YouTube Livestream, with some in-person)
Vespers – Thursday’s during Advent @ 4:45pm to end Eucharistic Adoration

I would like to invite others to help lead and assist with these prayers throughout the season. I am happy to provide guidance along the way, but want people to learn how easy and meaningful these prayers can be. We have opportunities for both virtual and live-in-person. Contact Dr. Holly to get involved.
